How It Works
Before implantation, an embryo must hatch from its outer shell (the zona pellucida). Laser-assisted hatching uses a precise infrared laser to create a small opening in the shell, helping the embryo hatch and implant into the uterine lining more easily. The entire procedure is performed by an embryologist under a microscope and takes less than 10 minutes.

Laser-assisted hatching is a clinically established, safe technique used for over 20 years. The infrared laser creates only a tiny opening in the zona pellucida (the outer shell) — it never contacts or damages embryo cells. Extensive research shows no difference in congenital anomaly rates between children born from laser-hatched embryos and those who did not receive hatching. The procedure is performed by licensed embryologists under strict quality control.
Does every IVF cycle require laser-assisted hatching?
Not every patient needs it. Laser hatching is an elective adjunct that physicians typically recommend in specific circumstances: multiple failed transfers, embryos with thick or irregular zona pellucida, older patients (generally ≥ 37), and frozen-thawed embryo transfers. For first-time IVF patients who are young with good-quality embryos, laser hatching is usually not necessary. Your physician will make a personalized recommendation based on your embryo evaluation results.
How much does laser-assisted hatching cost?
